Indibloggies 2005 ~ Nominations Start

Ok People! The moment has arrived and we are pleased to announce the start of the nomination process for the Indibloggies 2005 Edition. To make the process more open and to allow a wider participation this time the nominations have to be done using the popular social bookmarking tool Delicious. Here are some things to note:

  1. Nominations would remain open from Sunday, Dec 18 to Wednesday, Dec 28 (IST). We will ignore nominations made before and after this duration. Jurors would “rate” the nominated blogs and final list would be compiled for each category (tentatively in the first week of January 2006) that would participate in the Polls.
  2. To nominate a blog/site you should bookmark the blog/site at Delicious (needs registration) using the “tags” mentioned below. These Tags would let you nominate a blog to a particular award-category. We recommend using the Indibloggies Nomination bookmarklet to ease the process. The bookmarklet will generate the Tags automatically for you. Even if you are not using the bookmarklet and bookmarking the site directly, it is recommended to use the Tag generator so that nomination doe not fail. There is no way for us to track a blog at Delicious that’s not nominated using the Tags prescribed below.
  3. A blog or site can be nominated only for one award-category. If a blog/site is nominated and/or rated for multiple categories, the Indibloggies reserves the right to decide the best suitable category for the blog/site.
    Update [21 Dec]:
This rule now stands amended. A blog can be nominated form multiple award-categories.
  4. You may nominate your own blog/site as well as other’s. In the latter case make sure the respective site owner has no objection to his/her blog/site being nominated to this award.
  5. Multiple nominations from one person are acceptable. However, repeated/quick submissions of a site may be considered as spamming and may lead to disqualification. It is advised therefore to nominate only your own blog/site. If you like any other blog/site to be nominated, we recommend you to get in touch with it’s author/moderator and urge them to nominate their blog/site directly. Please note that we are only recommending nominating your own blog/site and taking prior permission from author of other nominated blogs, this is not a rule.
  6. Sites with filthy and objectionable content would not be accepted under any circumstance.
  7. Jurors can also nominate their own blog/site but they are not allowed to “rate” it.

How do I Nominate a blog/site?

Simple, just bookmark it at Delicious. If the site is in an Indian language other than English remember to specify the site title in “Roman”.

There are two ways to do it; the first (and the recommended) way is to use the Indibloggies 2005 Nomination bookmarklet. To get the bookmarklet, click here.

The second way is to bookmark the blog/site the usual way (If you have never used Delicious, here is some help). The important thing to remember is that you should atleast use the following Tags (note that the text in red is the actual “Tag”, rest of the text is to explain the tag):

  1. for:Indibloggies (this Tag is compulsory and your nomination would not be treated as a Nomination unless this Tag is used). Details on the "for" tag are here.
  2. Use any one of the following Tags to indicate the award-category you are nominating the blog for (text in bracket indicate the category). This Tag is also compulsory, no nomination would be accepted without a category.
    • ib05BestIndiblog (IndiBlog of the year)
    • ib05Humanities (Best Humanities IndiBlog)
    • ib05Sports (Best Sports IndiBlog)
    • ib05SciTech (Best Science/technology IndiBlog)
    • ib05Dir (Best IndiBlog directory/service)
    • ib05Tagline (Indiblog with the best tagline)
    • ib05Topical (Best Topical IndiBlog)
    • ib05Design (Best Designed IndiBlog)
    • ib05New (Best New Indiblog)
    • ib05Photo (Best Photo Blog)
    • ib05Lifetime (IndiBlog Lifetime achiever)
    • ib05Group (Best Group Blog)
    • ib05Indic (Best Indic blog. If you use this Tag you must also use the language Tag as discussed in Step(3) below)
  3. If you selected the Best Indic Blog category in Step (2) then you must additionally specify the language of the Blog using one of the following Tags:
    • ib05Hindi (Hindi)
    • ib05Bengali (Bengali)
    • ib05Gujarati (Gujarati)
    • ib05Marathi (Marathi)
    • ib05Tamil (Tamil)
    • ib05Telugu (Telugu)
    • ib05Malayalam (Malayalam)
    • ib05Kannada (Kannada)

If this sounds too complex, for your rescue there is this Tag generator.

Examples:

  • A blog nominated for best Sports blog category will have the following tags:
    for:indibloggies ib05Sports
  • A blog nominated for best Indic blog (Tamil) category will have the following tags:
    for:indibloggies ib05Indic ib05Tamil

Update: For all the newbies and for those who did not get the Nomination process, Saket has prepared a nice step-by-step guide. If you still don’t get it, send us a request and we would do it for you.

AAAh that nomination thing looks like toooo technical and cumborsome to me!

Why is’nt there is easier , plain way? for example, send my nomination to an e-mail address?

Now it is all your previlage to accept it or not?

I think you should give this kind of option too.

    Hi

I tried the script but I cannot add to favorites because I use Safari (mac), so should I just add the sites to Delicious and leave it at that? Also, do I have to contact the blog site owners first?

  • 4. Srijith | December 19th, 2005 at 5:11 am

    Raghav,

You can add the site directly to delicious as long as you tag them properly for the nominated category and the compulsory ‘for:Indibloggies’ and the “award-category” tags. For ease: you may also use the “Tag generator” as mentioned above, copy-paste just the Tags and rest is same as bookmarking any other site.

  • 5. Vulturo | December 19th, 2005 at 5:17 am

    Raghav,

Yes you can directly tag at del.icio.us - there are 2 compulsory tags - for:indibloggies, and one main category tag (depending on the category). If the category is Indic (ib05Indic), an additional language tag is to be added. As Srijith suggested, use the Tag generator to get the tags right.

It is not required that you should contact/take the consent of blog owners before nominating them (but is advisable, to avoid multiple nominations of the same blog and to ensure that the site owner has no objection to his/her blog being nominated).

    Thanks :-)

It is advised therefore to nominate only your own blog/site.

Why do your rules seem to lead to this conclusion? Sure, if I want to nominate someone I will get their consent — that part I understand. But why does that lead to “therefore” I am better off nominating only myself? This part I don’t understand.

  • 7. Debashish | December 19th, 2005 at 5:52 am

    Dilip,

    The reasons are many.

I have had one blogger severely object to her blog being nominated (saying her husband did that in naivety) in the past.

Secondly, when bookmarking using the “for” feature of del.icio.us, people may not perhaps be able to search the already bookmarked sites (jurors are able to get the notifications through a “private feed”) so multiple nominations for the same site may take place making life miserable for the Jurors.

Hence the “advise”! And I insist that it’s only an “advice”, not a “rule”.

I have to disagree with you Ravi on this. What could be more easier than bookmarking a site using delicious?

I agree that the tricky part for the non-geeky may be perhaps “using the right tags”. But to take care of that, I have provided the custom bookmarklet as well as the “tag generator” for those who may not like to use the bookmarklet.

The geeky lot, I presume would directly bookmark using the specified tags.

    3. A blog or site can be nominated only for one award-category. If a blog/site is nominated and/or rated for multiple categories, the Indibloggies reserves the right to decide the best suitable category for the blog/site.

I know of many blogs that fit comfortably into more than one category. Let’s take a hypothetical group blog with great photography, superb sports writing and a fab tag line. If you only allowed it to be entered in, let us say, the group blog category, then the photo blo, sports blog, best tag line and even IndiBlog of the year would be impoverished by its absence. And possibly, blogs less accomplished could win in those categories.
Isn’t the idea supposed to be that the best blogs win?

multiple nominations for the same site may take place making life miserable for the Jurors.

Huh? Mutliple nominations, to my feeble mind, indicate that the nominated blog is considered nomination-worthy by many. Surely that is A Good Thing?

  • 10. Debashish | December 19th, 2005 at 12:19 pm

    Peter,

The limitation on one blog-one category is more a “technical limitation” on my part. I decided to use the “bookmarking tools” this time for the entire nomination and “rating” process. The problem with these tools is: (1) You can bookmark a site only once and (2) the tags are not correlated. How do you split votes for two categories?

The idea is to award the best of the blogs but the idea is also to bring-forth and recognize lot many blogs. If a single blog wins in three categories, I am denying prizes to many others. I have maintained this view for long that the thing that matters is the final list of blogs that emerges for Polling. That formidable list would be worth noting, and each of us would surely note few outstanding blogs that they never read before.

Multiple nominations for a single blog may be a parameter for a blog’s popularity but we are not taking that into account yet (it would have been easy to end the process right here). Irrespective of how many nominations they get, a blog is a single bookmark for each Juror.

The Final Polling will, hopefully, level all these minor shortcomings.

It is unfortunate that you have chosen such a cumbersome method of nomination. This process will reult in fewer nominations this year. I think you must still consider nomination by email for the technologically challenged.

  • 14. VK Narayanan | December 21st, 2005 at 6:57 am

Would you please consider adding one more category for “Food and Drink”?

We are not very sure under which category can we nominate our Indian food blog - My Dhaba. We are blogging about traditional Indian home cooking with recipes, details, and videos.

    Opinions please. Cheers!
